Just Breathe

Just Breathe

I’ve been saying it for years. Just breathe!

Most of us are in an ongoing state of overwhelm and anxiety from the stressors of society. Our nervous systems are in a near constant “fight or flight” response pouring out adrenaline, norepinephrine and cortisol, the stress hormones that are damaging our bodies.

One simple, yet powerful solution is to breathe. Pause from your day and take five deep, long breaths. It will reset your neural network and allow you to be in the moment.

I’m excited and hopeful that we can teach these techniques to children, so that they may have an early start on navigating more successfully through life and manage their emotions Wonderful video.

I look forward to your thoughts and comments.

Dr. Adam Sheck

Do You Own Your Mission?

Do You Own Your Mission?

I was recently interviewed about being a mission specialist and supporting people in living their life purpose, their mission. Here are some excerpts:

What exactly IS a mission specialist?

It’s a term that I appropriated from NASA’s space program, which is only fitting, as I was an engineer before I became a psychologist and psychotherapist. I’ve always been interested in connecting people with their passion. I have specialized for years in helping couples bring passion back in their relationships. And while I still love working with couples and continue to do so, now in the second half of my life, the concept of a ‘mission’ and finding a life purpose has been calling to me. If I look at my work as a psychologist over the decades, ultimately it has been about connecting people to their real passion; their purpose. [Read more…]

Honoring The Passion Of Steve Jobs

Steve Job's PassionHonoring The Passion Of Steve Jobs

Did I ever meet Steve Jobs?  Not in person.  Yet he had a profound impact on my life, as he did on so many.  And his death touched me, impacted me, saddened me. On this anniversary of his death, I’m honoring that impact by sharing my thoughts.

He was a PASSIONATE man!  Probably not a perfect man, yet who is?  He lived his vision.  He was true to himself.  He didn’t compromise.  He didn’t settle.  He pushed himself and those around him to live full out, to live their greatness.

Everyone knows how he dropped out of school and started Apple in his garage.  How he was thrown out of his own company, replaced by a soft drink manager.  How he picked himself up, continued to live his vision, got his company back, and then brought it out of near bankruptcy to become (at least now) the largest company in the world.  He created, innovated, had a family and children and had interesting taste in clothes.

I remember as an undergraduate at MIT [Read more…]

5 Myths That Keep Men Stuck Part 5: Men Intimidated By Powerful Partners

Powerful PartnerWelcome to Part 5, the final post of my five part series on the five “myths” or beliefs or perceptions about men that keep us stuck in our relationships and in our lives. They are stereotypes that keep us disempowered and prevent us from fully expressing who we are in the world.

You may review the series, beginning with Part 1 by Clicking Here.

In no particular order, the “Five Male Myths” are:
1. Men don’t like to communicate or share their feelings 2. Men are afraid of commitment
3. Men’s top priorities are power, success and money.
4. Men are only attracted to looks and are only interested sex.
5. Men don’t want to be with or are intimidated by powerful/smart/successful partners.

Now let’s move on to the final myth.

MYTH #5: Men don’t want to be with or are intimidated by powerful/smart/successful partners.

This myth seems to cater to the idea of the fragile male ego. We can’t tolerate the “competition” of a partner who is too smart, too successful, too powerful. The myth is that we want someone that [Read more…]
