An article on the ABC News Website suggests that “kinky” sex is increasing and perhaps it is due to the Internet. As a psychologist and couples therapist, I believe that while it might be true that the interest in sado-masochism, bondage/domination and the paraphilias is increasing, I’m curious about what might be behind this.

Is it that couples are seeking out more intensity in their relationships and these types of sexual activity are providing them with it? Are couples becoming more open and receptive to taking sexual risks with each other? Is this a sign of increased sexual health while challenging the social norms simultaneously?

The other question in my mind is whether these “out of the box” sexual activities are truly on the rise or whether we are just hearing more about what is already going on, due to the Internet. We have a whole new world of “social networking” to connect us to like-minded individuals and we are certainly finding ourselves in interesting times. To read the full ABC News Report, click below:
